Lidl’s ecological revolution in its cleaning products

 

According to a study by the John Hopkins University In the United States, Europeans who regularly eat normal amounts of shellfish eat about 11,000 microplastics a year. This is just one example of the large amount of these emissions that occur in the world. For this reason, Lidl has wanted to do its bit by eliminating microplastics from its products cleaning, cosmetics and detergency.

These are small particles no more than 5 millimeters in size, which are used mostly in Cleaning products and cosmetics to give specific characteristics to liquids. For example, microplastics are used by industries to give texture to creams and lotions, to improve absorption into the skin, to increase water resistance or to give a more opaque appearance and thus create creaminess.

Most of the time we do not think about the large doses of microplastics that we may be ingesting in one way or another throughout the day. For this reason, it is of vital importance that the large supermarket chains be aware when it comes to eliminating all those that are in their hands. Since the whole process is a chain, and the more it is used, the more we will later ingest products that contain these particles.

Remove microplastics from more than 250 products

The company has to its credit more than 250 cosmetic, cleaning and detergent products. And since this year it is beginning to eliminate from them all microplastics that may be present during the manufacturing process. In this way, the company foresees that by the end of the year each and every one of these particles that make the environment suffer so much will have been eliminated.

Currently, we are going to find these products under the brand name Cien, W5 and Formil. And as reported, they have already been eliminated in 45% of the total of all these cleaning supplies. Hoping that this number will continue to increase as time goes by and your efforts pay off.

The general director of purchases of Lidl in Spain, Miguel Paradela, assures that all this is the result of a great work that they have been doing since 2015. And it is that the company, together with its suppliers, set the objective of having a commitment continuous with the environment. Lidl strives to achieve 100% recyclability of its products by 2025

Lidl has an international strategy that aims to guarantee 100% recyclability of its products in the coming years. This project is called REset Plastic, and it was launched in 2017 with the intention of raising awareness about the importance of making good use of the containers once they have been used. In this case, it is based on 5 fundamental pillars: REidear, REdesign, REduct, REcycle and REcollect.

In this way, the company is re-developing projects so that the design of its products is as sustainable as possible. Reducing the use of plastics, increasing the use of recycled packaging, risking with alternative materials and guaranteeing the recyclability of its products. This will unseat many other brands that are still far from achieving this historic milestone. Which will make Lidl position itself as one of the best supermarket brands in the sector.
